Moving Checklist
What to do first
- Make reservations with a moving company or truck rental company.
- Hold a garage sale and sort through your "treasures" hidden in the garage and closets.
- Make any necessary repairs; arrange for any necessary cleaning services.
Preparation
- Fill out the change of address kit from the post office or go to http://www.ups.com 2 to 4 weeks ahead of the move.
- Notify bank, charge cards, magazine, newspaper, doctors and veterinarian of the change of address.
- Make arrangements to transfer your insurance coverage, auto, fire, health, and life.
- Contact the utility companies and advise them of your moving date to arrange cancellation and reconnection of services.
Just before you move
- Pack an overnight bag with your personal items and clothing.
- Take care of those last few loads of laundry.
- Pack your "First Day" box and include toilet paper, trash bags, towels, personal items, cleaning supplies, utensils, cups and plates, tools and all those items you can't live without.
Plus, if you're moving out of town
- Get copies of medical and dental records and prescriptions for your family and pets.
- Get copies of children's school records.
- Consider special car needs for children and pets when traveling.
- Empty your safety deposit box.
- Carry traveler's checks or an ATM card for ready cash until you can open a bank account.
Moving Day
- Contact the utility companies to verify that services have been disconnected.
- Do your final walk through and double check closets, drawers, and shelves.
- Leave all old house and mail box keys needed by new owner with Realtor.
- Leave all owners' manuals and warranty information for items left in the house.
- Leave garage door openers and the code to burglar alarm and phone number of monitoring service if not discontinued.
