Factors to Consider Before Renting
Location: Do you need to live close to work, school or family? Do you have your own vehicle or will you need public transportation?
Needs: It is also important to consider things like number of bedrooms, bathrooms, unit amenities, storage, and if you have kids or pets.
Deposits: Security and pet deposits are due when you first move in. Security deposits usually run from $100 to an amount equal to one month’s rent. Pet deposits are generally around $300 depending on size and breed. These deposits are required to help cover the cost of possible repairs and damages to the apartment. If there is no damage or repairs as determined by apartment personnel, the deposit is refunded at move out.
Utilities: Generally you will be paying for electricity, cable and phone service; however, more and more complexes are including water, gas and trash collection as part of the monthly rent. Some apartments include all utilities. Remember most utilities will charge a connection fee or deposit.
Renter’s Insurance: Your personal property is not covered under the apartment communities insurance. You will be responsible for replacing any of your property that is stolen or damaged by fire and water. Renter’s insurance is inexpensive and most people don’t find out how important it is until they suffer a loss.
